It’s been a whirlwind of a year that has included isolation and unprecedented changes to the way we live. And some consumers turned to shopping this holiday season to fill an emotional and physical void that many of us are feeling.
In 2019, Americans took on an average of $1,325 in holiday debt, according to MagnifyMoney’s (@magnify.money) annual post-holiday survey. Unfortunately, this year’s circumstances and anxieties easily led to more overspending, meaning holiday debt could be worse if we didn’t check ourselves and curb the spending.
Here are some tips to help overcome holiday debt and set up 2021 for success.
1) Stop the bleed: Triage your finances now - If you took on debt to pay for your holiday shopping, you need to make some immediate damage control efforts.
2) Get a game plan - Pay off your holiday debt as quickly as possible
3) Think ahead - Be prepared for next holiday season.

This is a really tough time for a lot of people. So if you are reading this and going through a tough time, do whatever you need to do to get back on your feet. It may take time, you may have to take on more debt or dip into savings, and just know that is okay.
However, once you emerge out of this challenging time remember this experience. Use it as fuel to prepare you for the next downturn. Things may get worse before they get better, but they will get better.
This brings us to the purpose of the latest blog post. Despite having a rough start on our financial journey we took several steps over the past 10 years to unintentionally prepare for this pandemic.

There it was on my #creditreport: a delinquent acc

There it was on my #creditreport: a delinquent account more than 90 days overdue. It was hurting my #credit and my chances at refinancing my #mortgage.
The only problem was — I didn’t recognize the account or remember opening it. I started to suspect I was the victim of identity theft.
#Identitytheft is when someone steals your personal information and uses it to commit #fraud. Typically this is credit fraud, meaning the identity thief will apply for credit or open an account in your name. But identity thieves may also try to get access to your #bankaccount or file #taxes in your name to try and steal a #taxrefund.
You can follow these steps to repair the damage and protect yourself from future potential fraud — and regain peace of mind.
1. Put a fraud alert on your credit
2. Collect information about the potential fraud
3. Dispute the fraudulent charges or accounts
4. Report the identity theft
5. Update all passwords and PINs
6. Run damage control on your credit
