He founded one of the first independent personal finance blogs in 2003 with the purpose of holding himself accountable for his own financial decisions. He created the Plutus Awards to highlight independent financial publishers.
Outside of financial media, Harlan is the executive director of the Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps.
