What inspired you to write this book?
I was having so many failings myself as the parent of emerging adults. I was so frustrated that as much as I knew about money, I was really struggling with getting the next generation to care, focus and get serious about setting themselves up for success, without being dependent on older family members- especially parents.
I started asking around with my friends and got more questions than answers. In other words, everyone was having similar struggles. What I did realize I had that could help was a network of amazing parenting and money experts, including financial therapists- because so much with teens and young adults is about mindset. I was able to harness the advice of so many incredible thought leaders as well as regular people. I also get very candid about my own setbacks and successes. I hope the book helps other parents and encourages all of us to talk more about these issues. We all think we are the only ones- but trust me- despite all the variations we have very similar struggles.
What is your book about?
Launching Financial Grownups is a call to action for parents of teenagers and young adults who want the best for their kids, but are beginning to realize their OWN financial independence, and financial separation from their children has to become a priority as well. It is also a practical guide for how best to raise our children into financially responsible, independent young adults in our rapidly changing, increasingly competitive economy.
What one key takeaway do you hope someone gets from reading your book?
LISTEN! I always tell parents to wait after they ask their kids questions- then wait for a few more beats after they answer. A lot of times, there is more they want to say, and more they want you to hear. It takes discipline to handle the silence before the answer but that is when the real stuff often comes out.
Who should read this book?
Parents of teens and young adults, as well as grandparents, family members, friends, and anyone who has an emerging adult in their life.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
I use apps like Centered and CaveDay
What does your writing space look like?
I need to move around a lot! It varies from the desk, on my couch, to my bed, to Central Park! Pre-pandemic I had a workspace I paid for but I have not gone back yet.
What are your top three favorite books of all time?
It’s constantly changing! Instead will recommend three books that I think my readers can benefit from reading after my book:
Cameron Huddleston’s Mom and Dad We Need to Talk
Julie Lythcott-Haims’ How to Raise an Adult
Ron Lieber’s The Price You Pay for College
